Planning a dinner menu—elaborate or simple—always poses a few challenges. The last thing I want on Valentine’s Day is to be scrambling in the kitchen, frantically scrolling through Pinterest for inspo, or, worst of all—resorting to pizza delivery for dinner. If your goal this year is to plan the perfect Valentine’s menu in advance, the following recipes won’t let you down for a romantic dinner at home.

From experience, I know that cooking for two is often easier said than done. Luckily, these apps, entrees, and desserts are ideal for 1-2. (But If you have leftovers, the more the merrier!). From simple salads to satisfying mains, look no further for the ultimate Valentine’s Day dinner at-home ideas.

17 Valentine’s Day Dinner at Home Ideas

Sit back and enjoy the love in the air. These menu ideas will make your Valentine’s Day dinner at home a (tasty and romantic) breeze.

Appetizers

valentine's dinner at home ideas cheeseboard for two

Cheeseboard for Two

Charcuterie is always a date-night favorite, but the assembly can get pricey. Constructing a smaller board fit for two is a simple option for a Valentine’s Day appetizer. Throw in a little bit of everything—sweet dark chocolate, salty olives, and creamy brie.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: While a cheeseboard can look elaborate, it takes little time to construct. Plus, you won’t fill up before the main course!

valentine's dinner at home ideas simple green salad

Simple Green Salad from Via Carota

Valentine’s Day dinner isn’t about an over-the-top experience—it emphasizes intimacy and simplicity. Focus more on your company and less on meal prep with this simple green salad tossed in a shallot vinegarette and topped with toasted walnuts.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: This salad requires little prep time and is easy to toss together. It’s a great option for when you’d rather go all-in on the main course or dessert.

Pesto Parmesan Potatoes

Pesto Parmesan Potatoes

Comfort foods are a must for any romantic dinner in my book. These pesto parmesan potatoes are both elegant and incredibly delicious. With the perfect ratio of salty to savory, they’re the perfect sidekick for any lighter main dish like fish or chicken.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Who doesn’t love potatoes? This dish is a step up from your typical baked or pan-friend spuds, making them a tasty addition that’s equally as stunning.

easy bruschetta

Easy Bruschetta

Bruschetta is a simple way to add a bit of color to your table. Keeping with4 the theme of reds and pinks for V-day, these cherry tomatoes add a burst of flavor and color. Pair with a bit of nutty pesto and a quality baguette for a bit of an Italian-inspired side.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Its ease is what makes bruschetta a great appetizer option for an intimate dinner. How could you turn down such a versatile addition to any menu with ingredients you probably have in the fridge?

Olive Oil & Rosemary Focaccia

Olive Oil & Rosemary Focaccia

Ah, bread. In any form, I look forward to enjoying its warm fluffiness as a complement to any main course. Homemade focaccia is an easy way to elevate any meal, and it’s less complicated than that sourdough you’ve been meaning (but dreading) to make.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Add a bit of olive oil and spices to dip, and you’ve got yourself a restaurant-ready addition to your Valentine’s Day menu. Your S.O. will be blown away—guaranteed.

Ricotta Board with Pears

Ricotta Board With Pears

Boards make appetizers ten times simpler without lacking in flavor or pizzazz. This board pairs rich and creamy ricotta with fresh and crunchy sliced pears to create a textural wonderland in every bite.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Aside from its incredible flavor, this ricotta board is a stunner in any setting. Plus, the ingredients whet the palate without leaving you too stuffed for the main course, making it a great option ahead of a heartier dish.

Main Course

vegetarian coq au vin_valentine's dinner at home ideas

Vegetarian Coq au Vin

This vegetarian Coq au Vin is the ultimate dinner for two. It’s the perfect portion size that won’t leave you with leftovers for days and comes together without too much hassle. Plus, if you’re looking to keep things meat-free or just lighter for the evening, you’ve met your match.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: This dish is an all-around winner when it comes to Valentine’s Day Dinner at home ideas. It boasts the comfort food element when paired with creamy mashed potatoes while still being sophisticated and elegant.

zucchini pasta

Zucchini Pasta

Pasta is the way to my heart, and I’m sure many of you and your valentines agree. That being said, this zucchini pasta is the perfect way to incorporate a fan favorite into your date night menu while still mixing it up from the typical penne or linguine.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: This dish is a great balance of flavor and texture while keeping things light. It also creates an opportunity to incorporate a veggie into your menu without preparing a separate side.

Sheet Pan Veggie Bowl with Yogurt and Herbs

Sheet Pan Veggie Bowl with Yogurt and Herbs

Talk about simple—this sheet pan veggie bowl is a must when time is of the essence. This bowl is the perfect combination of hearty veggies and creamy yogurt in every bite. Plus, sheet pan recipes make clean-up a breeze.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: With less time in the kitchen, this sheet pan meal gives you more room to focus on choosing a movie to settle in with or to bake a sweet treat with your S.O.

Spring Potato Pizza with Burrata and Asparagus

Spring Potato Pizza With Burrata and Asparagus

Okay, I know I said I strive not to resort to pizza on V-day, but this potato pizza is one of my exceptions. First of all, it’s homemade and far more delicious than the greasy pepperoni you’d get elsewhere, and second, it features an incredible combination of flavor with fresh arugula and subtly sweet burrata. Sounds like a winner to me.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: This pizza is far from a last resort on Valentine’s Day. Its presentation alone makes it a great menu option. Plus, it’s the perfect size for two.

Slow-Baked Salmon with Citrus, Fennel, and Herbs

Slow-Baked Salmon with Citrus, Fennel, and Herbs

Salmon is always a great idea when it comes to cooking for two, as 1-2 filets tend to be the perfect size for a pair. If you’re looking for an elevated way to cook this fish on Valentine’s Day without the hassle of grilling but with equal amounts of flavor, this slow-baked salmon will satisfy all your needs.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Simply prep and throw this salmon in the oven for a stress-free main course. It’s a lighter option that pairs well with a heartier side like potatoes or quinoa.

sweet and spicy braised short ribs

Sweet and Spicy Braised Short Ribs

I can’t get enough of these sweet and spicy short ribs. They’re the perfect serving size where me and my partner can enjoy as much as we please with a bit left over. Plus, they’re a bit different from our typical weekly menu, making them perfect for this special occasion.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: If you’re looking to put more effort into your Valentine’s Day dinner menu, these short ribs have you covered. Pair with creamy polenta or roasted veggies for a well-balanced and elevated evening meal.

Bonus: Dessert!

chocolate pound cake

Classic Chocolate Poundcake

It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without a little bit of chocolate! Camille’s chocolate poundcake isn’t just stunning—it’s the perfect bit of chocolate heaven that can be enjoyed post-dinner and even the next day.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Chocolate—need I say more?

Salted Caramel Pots de Creme

Salted Caramel Pots de Creme

Personal desserts make dining just a bit more fun. These pots de creme are worth every moment spent creating them. Just look at that presentation—it practically screams romantic dinner for two.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: If chocolate isn’t your thing (no shame), this salted caramel option still brings all the sweetness you’re looking for in your V-day dessert.

Chocolate Chip Tahini Shortbread Cookies

Chocolate Chip Tahini Shortbread Cookies

I love to combine sweet and savory flavors when curating desserts and Daphne Oz’s chocolate chip tahini shortbread cookies do just the trick. Think nutty sesame seeds, buttery shortbread, and indulgent dark chocolate sprinkled throughout. Bonus: the dough freezes beautifully, so you can enjoy them beyond February 14th.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Who doesn’t love sharing a plate of cookies while snuggling up on the couch with a cozy bev and comfort movie? I’m sold.

Double Chocolate Cookie Skillet

If you, like myself, love whipping out the cast iron for special occasions, this double chocolate cookie skillet is for you. Top with a bit of vanilla ice cream, grab two spoons and dig in.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: This skillet cookie keeps things simple and dishes to a minimum.

Raspberry Tiramisu

Raspberry Tiramisu

With a touch of color and freshness from raspberries paired with coffee and cream complements, this raspberry tiramisu is a romantic and indulgent dessert option. While I’d make this sweet treat whenever the craving strikes, the pop of fruity red makes it perfect for Valentine’s Day.

What Makes It Date-Night Ready: Making a baking-dish dessert is a great way to accommodate those with a big (or small) sweet tooth post-dinner.

A Winter Kale Salad with Apple & Gruyere—Plus the Secret to Making Kale Taste Amazing https://camillestyles.com/food/kale-apple-salad/ https://camillestyles.com/food/kale-apple-salad/#respond Mon, 05 Feb 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=258494 Do this one thing to change your kale salad game.

The post A Winter Kale Salad with Apple & Gruyere—Plus the Secret to Making Kale Taste Amazing appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
If you spent your January trying to eat more leafy greens, I get it—another kale salad in your life may not sound all that exciting. But I’ve found that kale is what you make of it. Sure, it can feel like a big bowl of roughage, but as shown here, it can also be an incredible vessel for crunchy almonds, sweet apples, a shower of salty Gruyère cheese, and creamy mustard dressing. And when you know how to properly massage it with a little olive oil and salt, kale can be pretty darn delicious, too.

If you’ve been around here awhile, you know that my recipes are flavor-forward and nutrient-rich. I want my food to taste amazing—and make me feel amazing, too. This kale and apple salad is packed with vibrant flavors, fresh ingredients, and the zestiest mustard dressing that takes it over the top. Read on to see how this salad comes together with just five ingredients (plus dressing), and how to make your kale taste every bit as good as “that kale salad you ate that time” in a restaurant. Promise.

How to Make This Kale Apple Salad With Gruyère & Almonds

This is one of those (amazing) recipes that has so much flavor and texture, it’s almost shocking how few ingredients it has! Here are the components to make this kale apple salad so delish:

1. Torn Tuscan Kale

A hearty, dark leafy green that provides the salad’s base. It’s packed with nutrients and adds a satisfying crunch.

2. Chopped Apple

Choose your favorite apple variety for a sweet and crisp contrast to the kale. I like one that’s crunchy and sweet, like a honeycrisp.

3. Chopped or Shaved Gruyère Cheese

Creamy and slightly nutty Gruyère cheese complements the kale and apple, adding depth of flavor and a salty contrast. You can sub parmesan or even an aged cheddar.

4. Red Onion

Thinly sliced red onion provides even more flavor and a beautiful pop of color to this salad.

5. Chopped Roasted Almonds

Roasted almonds bring the toasty smokiness this salad needs—not to mention, a delightful crunch.

6. Mustard Dressing

A zesty mustard dressing ties all the ingredients together, infusing the salad with tangy richness. (Which kale really needs, in my opinion.)

How to Make Kale Taste GREAT

Kale gets a bad rap, and rightfully so: it can be hard to swallow when not property prepared. Here’s how to make it something you’ll actually crave.

 1. Massage the kale. Before assembling your salad, massage the kale leaves with a touch of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt for a minute or two, until it’s shiny, silky, and reduced in size. This helps soften the leaves and reduces bitterness.
 2. Chop finely. Finely chop your kale to make it easier to eat and ensure the flavors come together perfectly.
 3. Add sweetness. The chopped apple adds a sweet contrast to the kale’s bitterness, making it more palatable.
 4. Balance with cheese. Gruyère cheese adds creaminess and richness, balancing the flavors in the salad.

Nutritional Benefits of This Kale Apple Salad

Because I like my food to nourish my taste buds and my body (yes, I ask a lot), it comes as no surprise that this salad is brimming with nutrition. Here’s how this kale apple salad will fuel you:

 • Fiber. Kale and apples are rich in fiber, aiding digestion and promoting a feeling of fullness.
 • Vitamins and minerals. Kale is a nutritional powerhouse, boasting vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like calcium and potassium.
 • Protein. Almonds and cheese provide a dose of plant-based protein, essential for muscle health and overall well-being.
 • Antioxidants. This salad is packed with antioxidants, helping to combat free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

Optional Ingredient Swaps

Every salad recipe is an opportunity for endless riffs and experimentation, based on your preferences and what you have on hand. Here are some easy modifications to try:

 • Make it vegan. Swap out Gruyère cheese for a dairy-free alternative like nutritional yeast or vegan cheese.
 • Add a protein boost. This salad is delicious topped with grilled chicken or roasted salmon for a full meal.
 • Try other fruits. Experiment with chopped pears, halved grapes, or sliced figs for other delicious winter fruit combinations.
 • Add other nuts. Feel free to use pecans, walnuts, or pine nuts in place of almonds—just make sure they’re toasted for that warm nutty flavor.

Trust me, you’re going to savor every bite of this delicious kale apple salad. Scroll on for the recipe and let me know what you think!

Since I’ve been sharing my gut healing journey over the past few months, I’ve gotten so many notes from y’all asking for more grain-free recipes and meal ideas—which is fun, because I honestly didn’t know if anyone would care about my new grain-free life! So, I’m very excited to share all the delicious food that’s been making me feel amazing lately. I personally love watching other people’s What I Eat in a Day episodes on social media. Especially when they’re created by other women who lead very full lives while still prioritizing healthful, bursting-with-flavor meals. I want all the details on how they do it.

A Note on ‘What I Eat in a Day’ Videos

On the flip side, most of us can relate to the tendency to compare our own eating habits to those of others, and one thing I’ve learned for sure through my years of research on diet and nutrition? There’s no one-size-fits-all “perfect diet” for anyone. The idea of bio-individuality is that each person has unique health needs and that our bodies react differently to various foods—which means that we can’t assume that just because one way of eating makes one person feel their best, it’s the best for us, too. Each of us has to discover our optimal diet by listening to our bodies, observing how we feel when we eat certain foods, and getting in tune with our own hunger and fullness signals.

With that as our foundation, I hope that my WIEIAD below sparks creative ideas in the kitchen, provides you with a few new recipes to try, and inspires you to keep it easy when life gets busy. And if you’re experimenting with a Paleo, Grain-Free, or Gluten-Free way of eating, these meal ideas have got you covered.

Why eliminate grains?

I want to be very clear from the beginning: Grains are not “bad.” Pizza is not “bad.” Sourdough bread is not “bad.” This is all about how specific foods make you feel, and I for one want to be eating in a way that supports my overall health. For my particular digestive system — and I’m learning, a lot of other people’s too — grains can be very hard on the GI tract, and there are a lot of hidden intolerances. This is a little more all-encompassing than a gluten-free diet, and it’s different than having celiac disease or a gluten-intolerance. Eating “grain-free” means eliminating gluten and wheat, and also corn, oats, quinoa, rice, buckwheat, rye, amaranth, and barley.

I share a lot more in my article about the effects of a grain-free diet on gut health, but to make a very long story short: when I stopped eating grains, my longstanding digestive symptoms went away. And I’m not the only one: Dr. William Davis says in his book Super Gut (which I highly recommend for anyone dealing with unresolved digestive issues):

“Wheat and grain elimination removes an extravagant source of intestinal inflammation and begins the process of healing your GI tract. ”

What I eat in a day for a healthy gut

Now that we’ve established the why, let’s talk about what I’m actually eating! Read on for 24 (delicious and nourishing) hours in my life:

Wake up

First thing: I make a pot of coffee. I prep it the night before so that all I have to do is hit the “power” button for it to start brewing. Lately, I’ve been adding some steamed pistachio milk which adds a little sweetness without any actual sugar.

I drink my coffee during my journaling/morning routine time, then mix up my daily dose of AG1 to sip on while I help the kids get ready for school. I love that AG1 gives me a potent burst of vitamins, minerals, and probiotics first thing and lays the foundation for good eating choices ahead.

Breakfast: Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins

I’ve been very focused on getting protein in the morning lately. Getting sufficient protein at your first meal of the day plays an important role in hormone regulation and blood sugar balance. Today it’s one of my Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins—I made a big batch of them on the weekend and popped in the freezer for easy breakfasts all week. To rewarm, I just pop it into the microwave on 50% power for about 90 seconds and top with a little butter. I also ate some strawberries and blackberries for a fiber boost.

All Day Water

Every morning, I fill up my big water bottle with filtered water, then I add a packet of Sunfiber (a prebiotic/probiotic blend that nourishes good gut bacteria—it’s invisible and completely tasteless) and a packet of LMNT electrolytes which helps me stay high energy and makes my water taste really good which keeps me sipping all day. I’m a fan of all the flavors, but watermelon is probably my top choice.

grain-free-meal-plan

Lunch: Tex-Mex Nourish Bowl

For lunch, I made a nourish bowl with Tex-Mex flavors. Since most nourish bowls use grains as a base, I used cauliflower rice instead—and didn’t miss the grains in this meal at all. Even if you’re not sensitive to grains like I am, the more you can fill your plate with veggies and protein, the more nutrient-dense your meals are going to be.

When I’m making a nourish bowl, I like to incorporate a cooked veggie, some raw veggies, a protein, something creamy like goat cheese or avocado, and then something crunchy like seeds or nuts or crispy chickpeas. And then I’ll do a dressing of some kind—sometimes I make one but today I used this Primal Kitchen one that I love.

Afternoon Snack: Pears with Cottage Cheese

For a snack, I am a huge fan of toast with all the delish toppings, and back when I was eating grains, toast with cottage cheese was a go-to protein snack for me. Since typical bread is now off the table, I’ve been looking for other healthy ways to satisfy those cravings. Turns out that a crunchy sliced pear is a really great vessel for cottage cheese and granola.

Dinner: Sweet Potato Black Bean Chili

This vegetarian chili is one of my favorite cozy recipes for cold days. I’m always on the hunt for dishes that are packed with nutrition, can be easily reheated, fit a variety of dietary needs, and most importantly, are incredibly delicious. Especially since several of my friends are either vegetarian or gluten-free. Thankfully this vegetarian chili checks off every single box.

I’m actually doubling up the recipe and making some to take to my friend Claire who just had a baby. This is such a great meal to take to friends in need because it’s so nourishing and it fits pretty much every dietary restriction. And it makes great leftovers—they can truly just keep it in the fridge and warm it up whenever they’re ready to eat.

Bedtime Snack

I try to avoid mindless snacking at bedtime, but I also cannot stand to go to bed hungry, so I just try to listen to my body and eat something if I feel like I need it. I always have a cup of tea (decaf chai or bedtime tea) with a little steamed pistachio milk or whole milk, which usually does the trick. On this particular night, I also ate a handful of Chocolate-Peanut Butter Skinny Dipped Almonds which I’m newly obsessed with.

Goodnight!

I’ve had my fair share of boring salads over the years. Just this week, I ordered a to-go salad at work and was less than impressed by what ended up being little more than leaves and dressing. For me, a salad is an opportunity to not only eat a nutritious meal, but a way to indulge in the textures and flavors of seasonal veg. But just as my lunchtime disappointment proved, salads often go overlooked—and few qualify as a meal on their own. That’s why I pulled out all the stops with this cauliflower salad.

Packed with nutritious ingredients, plant-based protein, and hearty enough to stand on its own, this cauliflower salad combines everything I love in a meal. It’s easy to prep in advance, allowing for a quick, 15-minute assembly when it comes time to eat. Trust me: this cauliflower salad makes your midday meal something to look forward to. Keep reading for tips, tricks, and the full recipe—plus options to customize to your liking.

Cauliflower Salad Meal Prep Tips

When I think of quick lunchtime meals, salads aren’t usually on my list. To make a visually and texturally interesting salad often requires a lot of chopping and ingredient prep. If I’m starving and only have a quick break in between meetings? The kind of salad I’m after usually isn’t in the cards. But with some simple planning and prep ahead of time, you can have this salad ready to go any day of the week.

Prep the chickpeas and cauliflower the night before. Both ingredients can be made ahead and kept in the fridge until ready to use. The best part is that both can also be prepped in the same bowl, made on the same sheet pan, and baked at the same time (re: minimal clean-up required). To help revive some of their texture for serving, warm the cauliflower and chickpeas in a pan over medium heat until crispy. In the meantime, you can toss everything else in a serving bowl. Quick, easy, and delish.

Pre-chop kale. Kale is one of those hearty greens that I prep as soon as I get home from the store. Wash your kale and run it through a salad spinner to dry completely. Slice thinly into ribbons and put into an airtight container with a paper towel to absorb any moisture. Kale will last a few days in the fridge when prepped this way and increases the possibility of me eating a salad for lunch.

Make a jar of dressing at the beginning of the week. This is one of the only regular meal prep things I do over the weekend. Tossing together simple ingredients like tahini, lemon/ACV, honey, and some spices in a jar gives me a delicious dressing that will last the whole week. Plus, it makes everything from bowls to sandwiches to yes—salads—that much better.

How to Make This Salad Your Own

When it comes to salads, there are no hard-and-fast rules. Consider the recipe below a guide that you can play with as you please.

Swap out your greens. Don’t like kale? Use romaine. Don’t have romaine? Arugula works great. Use what you have on hand instead of feeling like you have to use a certain leafy green. (No unnecessary grocery trips here!)

Adjust your spice levels. This cauliflower offers a slight heat that you can play up or dial back as you please. Use your favorite hot sauce and add more if you prefer extra spice.

Use different vegetables. I’m a less-is-more kind of girl when it comes to the veggies I include in my salad. My only rule? They have to work well together. If I don’t have cauliflower on hand, I might sub sweet potatoes instead. I also like sliced celery or red onions for extra crunch and bite.

Add protein. The chickpeas and feta are a great vegetarian source of protein. But feel free to switch it up as you please.

 • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
 • big pinch of salt and pepper
 • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the chickpeas:

 • 1 can of garbanzo beans, drained, rinsed, and dried
 • 2 tablespoons tahini
 • 1 1/4 teaspoon paprika
 • 1 tablespoon olive oil
 • big pinch of salt and pepper

For the salad:

 • kale, sliced into thin ribbons
 • romaine, chopped

 1. Make the dressing. Add the ingredients into a jar and shake to blend until smooth. Taste and adjust to preference. Thin with water as needed. Store in an airtight jar in the fridge.
 2. Prep the cauliflower and chickpeas. Preheat oven to 425 F. In a large bowl, add the hot sauce, honey, paprika, salt and pepper, and olive oil. Stir to combine. Add the cauliflower florets and toss until all florets are coated. Pour the cauliflower onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. In the same bowl, add the tahini, paprika, olive oil, and salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Add the chickpeas to the bowl and toss until coated. Either add the chickpeas to the same sheet pan on the other half or to a separate sheet pan. Bake both the cauliflower and chickpeas for about 15 minutes. Toss and flip to ensure even baking, then bake for another 10-15 minutes until the chickpeas are crispy and the cauliflower is golden. I’m always on the hunt for dishes that are packed with nutrition, can be easily reheated, fit a variety of dietary needs, and most importantly, are incredibly delicious. Especially since several of my friends are either vegetarian or gluten-free. Good news y’all—this vegetarian chili recipe checks off every single box.

Why You’ll Love This Vegetarian Chili Recipe

This sweet potato and black bean chili is on my short list of go-to’s when I need to deliver dinner to a friend who’s sick or just had a baby. It’s packed with hearty black beans, flavorful veggies, and loads of spices (plus, all those toppings) so no one will miss the meat. And did I mention the incredible amount of plant-based protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals contained in this bowl? I always make enough of this to feed the fam for dinner, provide leftovers for lunch the next day, and maybe even freeze a batch for a future meal.

So when I want to send a little love to a friend in need of a hot meal, or I need a quick, healthy (and easy) dinner, this vegetarian chili recipe is always my go-to.

Sweet potato chili.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Vegetarian Chili

Sweet potato. Y’all know it’s my favorite root veg, and I’ll add it to every last dish. It’s such a standout in this vegetarian chili recipe.

Red bell pepper. It goes perfectly with the sweet potato, contributing to the chili’s color and is such a classic, Tex-Mex veg.

Garlic. I love its slightly pungent aroma as it caramelized in the pot.

Tomato paste. Adds a nice touch of richness to your chili.

Spices. We’re going with a blend of chili powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper to taste. This dish is all about incorporating as much flavor with as few ingredients as possible.

Crushed tomatoes. The essential base.

Black beans. These add a ton of plant-based protein and fiber while bulking up your chili so no one will miss the meat.

Sweeteners. The zest and juice of one orange plus a tablespoon of honey. Trust me, don’t leave these out.

Toppings. Arguably my favorite part of the entire dish! The options are endless here, but I consider avocados, cheese, cilantro, green onions, limes, and tortilla chips a must.

I tend to look for opportunities everywhere. No matter how seemingly mundane or monotonous, every moment presents us with the space to nourish our bodies and support our souls. One example? Our lunch break. While it often goes overlooked, this small pause between meetings and tasks can serve as a moment of mindfulness that fully recharges us for the rest of the day.

As someone who leans into her everyday rituals to keep her grounded, it probably comes as no surprise that I love to create a ritual of my go-to, midday meal. Case in point: my current obsession is a Nourish Bowl. It’s as simple and healthy as it is Instagram-worthy. For those of you who love variety, it starts with a base formula that you can riff off with whatever ingredients you have on hand.

My Nourish Bowls are almost always inspired by a leftover ingredient in my fridge. Whether that’s shredded chicken from last night’s dinner or a batch of roasted veggies I meal-prepped the weekend before, it’s a delicious combination that elevates any weekday lunch. I partnered with Target to share my favorite Nourish Bowl recipes prepped with fresh, simple ingredients from their brand, Good & Gather.

My “Formula” for a Delicious Nourish Bowl:

The key ingredients in my signature Nourish Bowl create a beautiful balance of texture and flavor—and remember, we eat with our eyes first! Research shows that eating a varied diet of colorful fruits and veggies creates a diverse microbiome, leading to a healthy and happy gut.

Here’s what I aim for in each of my grain bowls. And remember, rules are meant to be broken—so feel free to add or omit as desired.

 • Raw veggies: sliced cucumbers, fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, etc.
 • Cooked veggies: roasted sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.
 • Pickled veggies (optional, but delicious): red onions, radish, purple cabbage, beets, etc.
 • Protein: Rotisserie chicken, tofu, tempeh, etc.
 • Something crunchy: Cashews, slivered almonds, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, etc.
 • Something creamy: Sliced avocado, your favorite cheese, etc.
 • A sauce: Hummus, dressing, or simply a drizzle of olive oil.

If you’ve been around for awhile, you’ll know that I’m on a never-ending quest to find ways to eat my vegetables without eating a salad. Basically, I want all the nutritional benefits of my veggies—without feeling like I’m just eating vegetables. Especially during Chicago’s bone-chilling winters, the last thing I’m craving most nights is a bowl of vegetables when I can cozy up to a recipe that truly satisfies. Thankfully, this healthy broccoli cheddar soup checks all the boxes.

IMHO, broccoli cheddar soup is the best soup. While followed closely in my rankings by tortellini/lasagna soup, baked potato soup, then tomato soup, a broccoli cheddar wins my heart every time. It’s rich and creamy, cozy and savory, while having just a bit of texture from the broccoli. There are certainly different versions out there. Some lean thick and creamy with all of the broccoli blended, while others have more of a cheesy broth with bigger florets keeping more texture. My version for a healthy broccoli cheddar soup leans on the brothier side, but still maintains that warm creaminess and flavor while being absolutely packed with vegetables.

Ingredients You’ll Need for this Healthy Broccoli Cheddar Soup

 • Olive oil
 • Onions
 • Carrots
 • Celery
 • Garlic
 • Thyme
 • Smoked Paprika
 • Zucchini
 • Cauliflower
 • Broccoli
 • Vegetable broth
 • Milk or cream (dairy free works great)
 • Cheddar cheese
 • Kale
 • Lemon juice

How to Make Healthy Broccoli Cheddar Soup

The best thing about this soup is that it’s a one pot meal that comes together with relatively little effort. It does involve a bit of chopping, but once you get everything prepped – which you can certainly do ahead of time – this soup comes together in about 30 minutes. Saute your vegetables with the spices for a bit to caramelize the flavors a bit, then add the broth and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Add your milk, then using an immersion blender, blend a bit of the soup to add a bit of thickness to the texture. Because I skip the step of adding flour as a thickener, blending a portion of the soup helps to add a bit of that creamy texture to the soup without having to make a roux. Then all you have to do is add your cheddar and kale at the end and you’re ready to serve!

Because there’s so many vegetables in this soup, I like to prep each one differently so that it doesn’t just feel like a vegetable soup and the textures can all stand on their own. You can of course omit any of these vegetables if you prefer or substitute with what you have on hand, but I find these vegetables to work well together.

 • Celery: Personally, I’m not a huge fan of celery in soup in most cases. But it makes for a great base, so I just like to chop the celery stalks very finely so that they can melt down with the onions in the mirepoix at the beginning of the cook time.
 • Carrots: I like to cut the carrots into thin rounds for this soup for the visual color they add. But you can also chop the carrots extra fine like the celery so that it melts more into the soup.
 • Zucchini: This is the easiest vegetable to add to almost any recipe to help add extra veggie content. Especially with soups, I like to shred the zucchini and add it to the carrots, onion, and celery at the beginning of cooking. I’ve made plenty of soups where I’ve added in shredded zucchini and no one even realized it was in the bowl.
 • Cauliflower and Broccoli: Cut and break apart the florets into the smallest possible pieces for this soup. Not only do they cook faster when you’ve broken the florets down, but the smaller pieces fit better onto a soup spoon, especially because I don’t blend the entire soup together.
 • Kale: Leafy greens are another easy way to bulk up the nutritional value of soups. Whether you prefer spinach or kale, chop the leaves into very thin pieces so they easily meld into the soup.

How to Serve and Store Leftovers of this Soup

Serve this soup piping hot! I like to top the soup with additional shredded cheddar cheese, lots of black pepper, and served with a big hunk of crusty bread for soaking up the broth. Because this soup is packed with ingredients, it doesn’t need a ton of frills and toppings to make it feel complete.

To store leftovers, let the soup cool then store in an airtight container in the fridge or, cool completely and store in freezer bags/containers. I prefer to reheat soup on the stove, so when ready to reheat, just add to a stovetop pot with extra broth if needed and bring up to a simmer before serving.

Read on for the recipe, and let me know how you like to have your broccoli cheddar soup!

Healthy Broccoli Cheddar Soup

 • Author: Suruchi Avasthi

Description

This easy veggie packed broccoli cheddar soup makes a healthy and cozy dinner.

Ingredients

Units
 • 23 tbsp olive oil
 • 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
 • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
 • 2 carrots, sliced into thin rounds
 • 2 tsp smoked paprika
 • 1 tsp black pepper
 • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
 • 3 large cloves of garlic, chopped
 • 1 large zucchini, shredded
 • 1 large head of broccoli, cut into small florets
 • 1/2 head of cauliflower, cut into very small florets
 • 1 32oz container of vegetable broth
 • 11 1/2 cups milk of choice, room temperature
 • 23 cups shredded cheddar cheese
 • 1 cups finely shredded kale
 • juice of 1 lemon

Instructions

 1. In a large stove top pot, add the oil and bring up to a medium heat. Add the onion, celery, carrots, and a big pinch of salt. Saute for a few minutes until the onion has started to become translucent.
 2. Add the paprika, pepper, thyme, garlic, and zucchini to the pot. Stir to combine, and cook for another few minutes until the vegetables begun to just turn golden and become fragrant.
 3. Add the broccoli and cauliflower florets and stir to combine. Add the broth. Bring up to a simmer, then cover the pot and let cook for about 10- 12 minutes, until the broccoli and cauliflower are tender.
 4. Add the milk and stir to combine. Using an immersion blender, blend a portion of the soup to desired thickness. If using a blender, take about 3-4 cups of the soup and add to a blender. Carefully vent and blend the soup until thick. Add back to the pot and stir to combine.
 5. Add the cheddar cheese to the pot. Sometimes I only use 2 cups if I prefer the recipe to be a bit lighter, and more if I want a cheesier texture. Adjust to your preference. Simmer soup until warmed through and the cheddar has melted.
 6. Add the kale to finish the soup and stir to combine. Adjust salt to taste, and add lemon juice.
 7. Serve hot. Enjoy!

Winter weeknights call for a dinner that’s nourishing and healthy—and let’s be honest, that comes together in less than 30 minutes. Which is why I love this simple sheet pan dinner: it comes together faster than takeout, and if you’re lucky, there’ll be leftovers. Scroll on for a few keys to success on whipping up this simple dinner. Bonus points for the lack of dishes to clean at the end at the end of the night! You’re welcome.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Sheet Pan Harvest Hash

 • Sweet potato: my favorite root veg adds natural sweetness
 • Brussels sprouts: they get crispy and delicious when roasted at a high heat
 • Bell peppers and red onion: they get really sweet when roasted and add gorgeous color

Simple hacks and shortcuts

 1. Pre-cut Vegetables: When I’m really in a time crunch, I’ll grab pre-cut veggies at the grocery to save some prep time. Choose colorful veggies like bell peppers, sweet potatoes, onions, and zucchini to add variety and visual appeal to your sheet pan hash. Then all that’s left to do is literally throw them on a sheet pan and let the oven do its job.
 2. Use Parchment Paper: Line your sheet pan with parchment paper to make cleanup a breeze. It also prevents sticking and promotes even cooking.

Ingredient swaps to customize your sheet pan harvest hash:

 • Switch up the sausage: Switch up the Italian sausage with chicken sausage, turkey sausage, or even plant-based sausage for a different flavor profile.
 • Omit the goat cheese based on your diet: If you’re dairy-free or following a strict paleo diet, substitute goat cheese crumbles with avocado slices or a dollop of compliant paleo mayonnaise.

Health benefits that make this harvest hash so nourishing:

 1. Nutrient-Rich: The colorful array of vegetables in this recipe provides a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They contribute to a well-balanced diet and support overall health and well-being.
 2. High-Protein: Italian sausage is a great source of protein, which plays a key role in muscle development, repair, and overall satiety.
 3. Paleo, Whole30, and Grain-Free Friendly: This recipe aligns with various diets due to its exclusion of grains, processed ingredients, and added sugars. It focuses on wholesome, natural ingredients that promote optimal health and well-being. It prioritizes real, whole foods that nourish and serve as a true reset for your body.
 4. Gluten-Free: The recipe is naturally gluten-free since it excludes grains, making it suitable for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
 5. Low-Carb: With its focus on vegetables and protein-rich sausage, this recipe is relatively low in carbohydrates, making it a great choice for those sticking to a low-carb or keto diet.

Our Favorite Non-Toxic Cookware—Tested and Reviewed https://camillestyles.com/food/best-non-toxic-cookware/ https://camillestyles.com/food/best-non-toxic-cookware/#comments Wed, 17 Jan 2024 20:09:33 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=129194 Toss the Teflon.

The post Our Favorite Non-Toxic Cookware—Tested and Reviewed appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
We shop for organic produce, we’ve swapped the toxic cleaners for safer stuff, ditched the artificial fragrances in our home, and moved to cleaner choices for our skincare routine. However, many are surprised to find that our cookware can actually be a major source of lurking toxic chemicals and can contribute to our body’s toxic load. The good news is that there are so many better non-toxic cookware options out there! And the best non-toxic cookware in 2024 makes clear: the options for healthier, safer picks are truly endless.

Materials and metals like aluminum, plastic, lead, and Teflon can pose serious risks to your health and are prevalent in a lot of cookware options. And if the cookware we constantly use is dishing out harmful toxins, we are doing ourselves and all that effort a disservice. So toss the toxic pots and pans and check out our guide to the best non-toxic cookware ahead.

woman cooking over non-toxic cookware

Toxic Cookware to Toss

Traditional Non-Stick Coatings

Teflon is the trademarked coating that makes non-stick cookware non-stick. It’s incredibly convenient and was a game-changer for cooking when it was introduced around 80 years ago. The issue is that these coatings (which contain compounds like PFOA or PTFE), are highly toxic and have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, organ failure, reproductive damage, and other health issues. (Check out the film Dark Waters and the documentary The Devil We Know for a deeper dive into the health risks.)

Newer nonstick coatings, like Teflon, technically no longer contain PFOA and PFOS. But you want to keep an eye out for Teflon cookware that was made before 2013 as it could still contain these dangerous chemicals. And while most Teflon-coated pans these days are PFOA-free, this often means that they still contain PTFE (PFOA or C8, which is used to make PTFE coating, and as we discussed, is considered a carcinogen). On top of that, high heat causes the chemicals to break down, releasing toxic fumes. Additionally, PFOAs and PTFEs don’t biodegrade, which means they can accumulate in our bodies increasing the risk of damage.

Aluminum

There is some debate over whether aluminum is safe. Aluminum exists in our environment and we all have some amount of aluminum exposure daily. However, research shows that aluminum is toxic at certain levels. Elevated aluminum levels have been linked to everything from anemia and other blood disorders, to ALS and Parkinson’s to cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and neurological problems.

Ceramic coated

Not all ceramic coatings are made equal. Skimp on the cheap ceramic coatings and instead look for one that’s certified by third-party testing and free of PFAs, PFOA, lead, and cadmium. All of us at Camille Styles are obsessed with Figmint, Target’s new line of functional (and super stylish) cookware. While the collection features cast-iron and stainless steel pots and pans, it’s the ceramic-coated sets that have our hearts. The 12-piece set is great for everyday, medium-heating cooking—think eggs, rice, and your daily essentials. They’re nonstick, super affordable for non-toxic cookware, and hold up so well. And can we talk about the color options? So good.

Is Ceramic Cookware safe?

Ceramic is great as it’s completely inert—meaning it won’t leach any harmful toxins. Ceramic non-toxic cookware pans are generally free of heavy metals, polymers, coatings, and dyes, plus, they’re dishwasher safe! Easier to wash than cast iron, you can just use warm soapy water. If you’re interested in trying, Xtrema is a great brand to check out. A note: you do have to be more careful with these pans, as they’re more fragile than other types of pots and pans.

Stainless steel

Not all stainless steel is created equal. When shopping you will see numbers like 200, 304, 316, and 430—the higher the number the stronger, longer-lasting it is, and the less nickel content it will have. Be sure to use gentle cleaners as something harsher can damage the lining, which then can allow the heavy metals in the core to leach into your food.

Cast iron

This is the OG non-toxic cookware. They take a bit of time to get used to if you’ve never tried them, but work so well once you figure it out and are budget-friendly! Some tips: heat before adding food, avoid soap when cleaning, and season regularly. (Check out this post for tips for seasoning.) There are many methods for cleaning cast irons, but my go-to is scrubbing with some salt and rinsing with water. I then dry it thoroughly, drizzle with cooking oil, spread it around, and then set it on low heat for a bit to ensure the pan is completely dry.

Glass

The main perk of glass cookware is that there are tons of budget-friendly glass options out there, Pyrex being the most common one. You can find everything from baking dishes, to round soup dishes to loaf pans.

small non-toxic ceramic cookware on stove

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is sometimes used for frying pans and woks. The non-toxic cookware option is similar to cast iron, and can output small amounts of iron into food, which is great if you happen to have someone with slight anemia in your home!

Porcelain Enamel

Enameled non-toxic cookware is usually made of cast iron that has been coated in enamel (think Le Creuset). While not perfect in terms of low heavy-metal content, I’d say this is one of the “better” options. The perk of this cookware is that it won’t rust, in contrast, to cast irons, if not properly seasoned. Cleaning is super easy with mild soap, water, and a gentle scrub pad. It is a bit on the pricier side, but your investment will last you a long time!

What makes a good Sunday night dinner?

There are several components that can set your Sunday night dinner apart from your weekday meals. This One Simple Dietary Change Healed My Gut Health Issues (Video!) https://camillestyles.com/food/grain-free-diet-gut-health/ https://camillestyles.com/food/grain-free-diet-gut-health/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2024 15:12:27 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=256741 I feel like a new woman.

The post This One Simple Dietary Change Healed My Gut Health Issues (Video!) appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Over the last few months, I’ve made a major shift in my diet—and (as I was surprised to discover) it actually changed my life. I wanted to share the story with you because it’s taken me on a health journey where I’m learning so much and feeling inspired to create and share so many new recipes with you. The big change? I’ve stopped eating grains. Yes, the girl who’s always been a pizza / sourdough / taco fanatic is no longer eating wheat, corn, quinoa, or any other type of grain at all. Let me explain.

Turns out, eating a grain-free diet healed the gut health issues that have affected me for the last decade. For years, I’ve been plagued with digestive issues that have sent me to countless doctors and practitioners, and surprisingly, simply removing grains from my diet eliminated all my symptoms within days. So today, I’m going to share the biggest changes I’ve seen in my health since going grain-free. My hope is that my story could help some of you on your own health journeys because I believe we all deserve to be living our most high-energy and vibrant lives.

First, watch the video below where I walk you through my journey—I also get into some of the “bonus” healthy habits I’ve been incorporating every day to feel the best I’ve felt in YEARS. Then, scroll on for some of my top grain-free diet and gut health learnings:

Grain-free diet and gut health

If you know me, you know that much of my life revolves around food. I’m a passionate cook, I love to eat, and I create recipe and food content for a living. I’ve always preached the philosophy that there’s room for everything in your diet—and I still believe that—unless those foods are preventing you from living your most vibrant and energized life.

The ONE thing I’ve learned in my years of research about nutrition is that there is no one-size fits all diet. Eating “grain-free” means eliminating gluten and wheat, and also corn, oats, quinoa, rice, buckwheat, rye, amaranth, and barley.

grain-free-diet-gut-health-2

Dr. William Davis says in his book Super Gut (which I highly recommend for anyone dealing with unresolved digestive issues):

“Wheat and grain elimination removes an extravagant source of intestinal inflammation and begins the process of healing your GI tract. ”

He goes on to explain:

Gliadin (a protein found in wheat) is directly toxic to the intestinal wall. Removing gliadin thereby removes a potent bowel toxin. Gliadin also breaks down normal intestinal barriers, allowing foreign substances, including gliadin itself, entry into the bloodstream…

Just as opioid drugs such as oxycodone and morphine cause constipation, so do gliadin-derived opioids slow intestinal peristalsis and cause constipation. Slowed peristalsis is a major issue in many cases of SIBO, and it can be reversed in the majority with wheat and grain elimination… Just by eliminating all wheat and grains, many people report complete relief or marked improvement of bowel urgency, acid reflux, heartburn, and constipation.”

grain-free-diet-gut-health-7

My gut health history

One thing I haven’t shared a lot about on the internet (until now) is my long-standing gut health issues. Yes, talking about sluggish digestion and extreme bloating is personal, but statistics show that nearly half of women struggle with digestive issues, so I think it’s time we normalize these conversations.

I actually don’t know the cause of my digestive issues. After seeing functional doctors, GI doctors, and undergoing lots of testing—no one has ever been able to give me an actual diagnosis (which is the case for most people suffering from digestive issues.) So like so many of you, I’m left to act as my own guinea pig and keep searching for something to help me feel better. And let me tell you, I have tried some things, including:

 • Basically every supplement and probiotic on the market
 • Intermittent fasting
 • Food combining
 • At-home SIBO tests
 • Making my own probiotic yogurt
 • Colonics
 • Hypnotherapy – yes, there is actually a school of hypnotherapy that claims to be able to heal the gut-brain axis and when you read about it, it makes a lot of sense, but it didn’t help me.
 • Tons of different elimination diets to see if it was a food allergy (no gluten, dairy, lectins, meat, night shades—but never cutting out all grains altogether).

Even after all that, I still struggled with the same issues. I would sometimes think that I found a solution and then I would end up right back where I started, dealing with the same old issues for weeks on end.

grain-free-diet-gut-health-13
grain-free-diet-gut-health-13

What happened when I stopped eating grains

The solution came during one of my worst bouts of continuous bloating and sluggish digestion. I was re-reading Super Gut and came to the line where Dr. Davis said, “Removing wheat and grains yields substantial improvements in GI health that aid in your efforts to reverse dysbiosis, SIBO, and SIFO and regain overall health.”

Since I’d tried just about everything else, I figured, what did I have to lose? So, starting that very day, I didn’t eat any grains at all. It may sound restrictive, but thankfully I love so many things that aren’t in this category: fruits, vegetables, cheese, olive oil, avocados, meat, fish, pasta made with chickpeas.

I was still eating deliciously and abundantly, and here’s the part that is SO crazy I would not have believed it if I hadn’t experienced it personally: within 48 hours, my gut health issues that had plagued me for over a decade were completely resolved. And stayed that way. Over the next 3 months, I followed my grain-free diet and felt better than I had in years. My energy was sky high, I slept great, I had a normal appetite instead of feeling uncomfortably full all the time, and my stomach was flatter than I could ever remember (even though I hadn’t actually lost weight.) I felt amazing.

grain-free-diet-gut-health-13
grain-free-diet-gut-health-13

Will I ever eat grains again?

The truthful answer is: I don’t know. Being the food lover that I am, I have tried reincorporating some of my favorites. The first thing I tried was corn, because, living in Austin—tacos are life. Our family went out for Mexican, I ate some delicious corn tortillas, and… the next morning, my digestion was off. So I got back on the grain-free wagon and within about a day, I was back on track.

The next thing I tried—a few bites of pizza, which I’m gonna admit, is my favorite food. But again, I woke up the next morning feeling the old bloat and I realized that no matter how good a few bites of pizza tasted in the moment, it wasn’t worth it for me to feel sluggish and gross all day. I loved the new way that I was feeling SO MUCH, that giving up some foods, even foods that I loved, was 100% worth it to feel this good.

And that brings us to the present! I think that I’ll try reintroducing grains in the future to see what happens, but right now I feel so good, I’m gonna stay off grains for the foreseeable future. It’s important for me to transparently share my journey with you because, although going grain-free may not work for everyone, I hope it can help someone. If you have unresolved gut issues, why not try eliminating grains for a week and just see how you feel?

Our gut health has a massive impact on our mood and energy levels, so taking time to figure out what works for your body is WORTH IT. And if you’re one of the many people also struggling with gut health issues, I promise that you really can feel great again. Keep looking for answers and experimenting until you find what works for you.

Leave me a comment if this resonates—I’d love to hear about your struggles in this area, what’s worked for you, and if you’d like to hear more about my grain-free journey! I have so many recipes and meal planning tips for this way of eating that I would love to share.

For me, the start of January is all about delicious and wholesome recipes that make meal prep feel effortless. As part of my gut-health journey, I’m currently eliminating grains and it’s made a really positive difference in how I feel. Although I’ve found cooking grain-free to be relatively simple and intuitive, grain-free baking definitely requires some experimentation. Through trial-and-error, I’m slowly honing in on my favorite recipes that use grain-free alternatives like almond flour, coconut flour, and cassava flour. And these grain-free zucchini muffins with chocolate chunks are my favorite baking experiment so far! If you’re on a grain-free or paleo diet or simply looking for a nutritious and tasty breakfast idea, you’re going to love these muffins.

These grain-free zucchini muffins make a satisfying breakfast (and a healthy lunchbox addition for my kids’ school lunches.) Read on for why you might consider cutting back on grains, what you need to make these deliciously satisfying muffins, and optional ingredient swaps to try.

Why I Eliminated Grains From These Muffins

I’m working on a post that deep dives into why I’m currently following a grain-free diet (it’s essentially cured the gut health issues that have affected me for years!) While grains are certainly not “bad” and can even be a really healthy part of some people’s diets, there are a variety of reasons why someone may choose to eliminate or cut back on grains.

 1. Lower Carb Content: Traditional muffins typically contain wheat, which is high in carbohydrates. Our grain-free version cuts down on carbs, making it a great choice for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet.
 2. Gluten-Free: Going grain-free means avoiding gluten, making these muffins suitable for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
 3. Nutrient-Rich Ingredients: Our recipe features nutrient-dense ingredients like seeds, nuts, zucchini, and coconut, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.
 4. Improve digestive health: Eliminating grains can reduce digestive discomfort and inflammation for some people (hand raised!)
 5. Enhance energy levels: A grain-free or paleo diet may help stabilize blood sugar levels, leading to sustained energy throughout the day.
 6. Support weight management: Lowering grain consumption often correlates with better weight control due to reduced carb intake.
 7. Reduce inflammation: Some find that avoiding grains can alleviate chronic inflammation and related health issues.

Now that you’re curious about giving grain-free baking a try, let’s dive into our Grain-Free Zucchini Muffin recipe.

What You Need for Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins

 • eggs
 • whole milk (or non-dairy milk)
 • brown sugar (I used the natural sugar substitute Swerve to avoid raising blood sugar levels)
 • orange juice
 • melted butter (or melted coconut oil for a dairy-free option)
 • vanilla extract
 • kosher salt
 • unsweetened shredded coconut
 • sunflower seeds
 • almond flour
 • coconut flour
 • baking powder
 • zucchini
 • walnuts
 • dark chocolate chunks (you can use Hu chocolate for a paleo-friendly option)
grain-free-meal-plan

How to Make Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins

This is a simple recipe that takes about 20 minutes start-to-finish. First, you’re going to blend together the wet ingredients: eggs, milk, brown sugar or Swerve, orange juice, melted butter, and vanilla.

Then, you’re going to grind up your coconut and sunflower seeds in a blender or food-processor. These form a nutrient-packed “flour” and also add really delicious texture to these muffins.

Finally, you add all your dry ingredients to the mixer, blend it up, and then stir in the grated zucchini, walnuts and chocolate. Spoon them into muffin cups, add your toppings, and bake!

Optional Ingredients Swaps

Feel free to customize this recipe to your preferences and dietary needs. Here are some optional ingredient swaps that work well in this recipe:

 • Use your favorite nut milk in place of the whole milk for a dairy-free and paleo-friendly version.
 • Substitute brown sugar with a natural sugar substitute like Swerve for a lower sugar option. This is what I do, and I swear my kids have no clue that these are free of added sugars.
 • Choose your favorite nuts or seeds for added texture and flavor. Try adding toasted pecans instead of walnuts, omit the chocolate if you like, and you can use pumpkin seeds instead of the sunflower seeds.

How to Store and Freeze These Muffins

I make a batch of these on the weekend, and then pop in the freezer so they’re ready for snacks and school lunches all week. To keep your Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins fresh and ready for a quick meal, follow these storage tips:

 • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
 • When reheating, warm them in the oven or halve and toast before serving for that perfect, crispy texture.
 • For longer storage, freeze the muffins in an airtight container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw them in the fridge or reheat from frozen. Here’s exactly how to freeze muffins for best results.

My Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins are not only delicious but also packed with wholesome nutrients for all-morning energy that won’t leave you crashing by 11am. Whether you’re following a paleo diet or simply looking for a grain-free treat, these muffins will satisfy. Read on for the recipe…

Grain-Free Zucchini Muffins with Chocolate Chunks (Gluten-Free and Paleo)

 • Author: Camille Styles
 • Total Time: 50 minutes
 • Yield: 12 muffins

Description

These healthy grain-free zucchini muffins are a paleo-friendly breakfast, or an easy grab-and-go-snack.

Ingredients

 • 2 eggs
 • 1/4 cup whole milk (or your favorite non-dairy milk)
 • 1/4 cup brown sugar (or natural sugar substitute like Swerve)
 • 1/4 cup orange juice
 • 1/4 cup melted butter (or melted coconut oil for paleo or dairy-free)
 • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
 • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
 • 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
 • 1 cup sunflower seeds (I use roasted and salted seeds)
 • 1 cup almond flour
 • 1/4 cup coconut flour
 • 2 tsp baking powder
 • 2 small zucchini, grated (about 3 cups)
 • 1/3 cup toasted walnuts
 • 1/3 cup dark chocolate chunks (use a brand like Hu for paleo)
 • For garnish: coconut flakes, chopped raw walnuts, sunflower seeds

Instructions

 1. Preheat oven to 350.
 2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together eggs, milk, brown sugar, orange juice, melted butter, and vanilla until fully combined.
 3. In a high-speed blender (or food processor), pulse the coconut and sunflower seeds until they’re a flour-like texture. You’ll know it’s ready when it starts to clump in the corners of the blender–don’t go past this because you don’t want them to release their oil.
 4. Add to the ground coconut and seeds to the wet ingredients. Add both flours and baking powder, then use a fork to lightly toss the dry ingredients together.
 5. Turn the mixer on low speed and beat just until combined, scraping down the bowl halfway through. Add the zucchini, walnuts, and chocolate, and stir with a spatula until just combined.
 6. Spoon into muffin cups and top with coconut flakes, walnuts, and seeds. Bake 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let sit in the muffin tin for about 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
 7. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Warm in the oven or halve and toast before serving (preferably with a little melted butter!)

Notes

The ingredients in this recipe were inspired by the one from Whole Food Cooking Every Day, by Amy Chaplin. This is one of my favorite resources for gluten-free and grain-free cooking.

Dry January was once seen as a challenge no one wanted to undertake. A month without booze? No, thanks. But now, with the shifting tides and more of us rethinking our relationships with alcohol, the month comes as an opportunity to reset and explore a new, more intentional approach. And thanks to the rapid expansion of the non-alcoholic category—and plenty of players coming on the scene—we have more delicious options beyond O’Doul’s. Truly, the best non-alcoholic drinks are a delight to sip and savor.

If you’re ready to sleep better, ditch the brain fog, and step into every day with more energy—join the party. Trust me, the best non-alcoholic drinks have come a long way. They’re bubbly, tasty, and just might rival your favorite glass of pinot. Skeptical? Pour a glass, then we’ll talk.

The Best Non-Alcoholic Drinks to Sip This Season

We’re coming off the holiday season and still riding the high of a new year. There’s no better time to reflect on how we’d like to show up for the rest of 2024. Do your intentions include avoiding hangovers at all costs? You’re in good company. Between canned mocktails and sophisticated NA wines, I guarantee you’ll find a new favorite ahead.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Non-Alcoholic Wines

NON

Let me introduce you to one of my new favorites. When I’ve tried non-alcoholic wines in the past, every bottle has come with zero nuance (I’m talking straight-up grape juice). Thankfully, the times are changing, and when you’re craving something full of distinct flavor, minus the booze, NON is a go-to. Not only do the minimalist bottles look undeniably chic on your shelf, but the real, natural ingredients are a perfect happy hour pour. Non5 is my favorite bottle, drawing upon tart and citrusy flavors that taste beautiful on their own or paired with your best curry.

Proxies

Another favorite, Proxies has made a name for itself in the space, holding its own as countless brands have flooded the market. I stick mainly to Pinot Noir and red blends as the temperatures cool, and Proxies’ Red Ember is my favorite bottle to warm up with. Expect a complex sip that pairs big and bold flavors with a deep, dark sweetness that touches upon all the nuance of black pepper, cayenne, and coffee. Wherever you fall on the Dry-ish January spectrum, Proxies will satisfy.

Kally

Come for the gorgeous labels, stay for the satisfying bubbles. (And come back again, because Kally makes a great gift.) I love a vibrant, crisp non-alcoholic wine alternative, and Kally is the best. The brand produces its beverages using verjus—the tart juice of early-harvested Chardonnay grapes—as the base for every bottle. From there, it’s infused and layered with a blend of herbs, botanicals, and teas for a resulting flavor that’s wonderfully complex.

The Golden Sparkler is my favorite and the best NA substitute for champagne. It’s sparkly, elegant, and made with zero grams of added sugar. Here’s to enjoying our bubbles minus the headache.

Allay

While I love that some zero-proof beverages taste exactly like (or even better than) the *real* thing, Allay is something else altogether. It’s fruity, floral, and always a delight. And let’s chat about the functional edge it boasts as well. Expect ingredients like ashwagandha and reishi to give your glass a stress-relieving, immune-supporting boost.

Best Non-Alcoholic Spirits, Mocktails, and Ciders

Seedlip

Seedlip was one of the earlier non-alcoholic spirits I tried, but within the past few months, I’ve seen it offered at bars, restaurants, and served at many events from baby showers to product launches. If you’re used to a gin and tonic or a vodka soda, give this one a try. Their variety pack of flavors lets you experiment a bit with a good soda water or sparkling water.

Duché de Longueville Cider

This is not the Marintelli’s you sipped on at family gatherings as a kid. Whereas most NA ciders are overly sweet and cloying, Duché de Longueville is a refined, fresh-tasting cider that pairs perfectly with any elegant meal. I popped a bottle of it on Christmas Eve and all my guests were asking for a second pour. It’s fruity, but still sophisticated and crisp thanks to the unique blend of French apples and elements of influence from the Normandy terroir. I’ll serve and bring a bottle to any gathering that calls for something special.

Figlia

I first tried the brand this fall, and the Fiore immediately sold me. The flavors are creative and lush, drawing floral influence from Italian gardens and capturing the bitter bite of a spritz sipped as a pre-dinner aperitivo. It’s perfect poured over ice with a simple orange peel for garnish. I love sipping Figlia while I’m cooking dinner and transitioning from the workday.

Ghia

When I took my first sip of Ghia, I couldn’t believe I was actually drinking a non-alcoholic beverage. Their mix topped with a splash of sparkling water tastes like the perfect summer spritz. They also have a fun selection of mixes or ready-to-drink cans with fun flavors inspired by the Mediterranean. I was happy to see this one around several bars and retailers.

De Soi

While most celebrities are going all-in on the tequila game, Katy Perry went the apértif (and adaptogenic) route utilizing botanicals to emulate a spritz. While most beverage companies rely on synthetic ingredients for taste, De Soi uses fruit juices and mushrooms for flavor—and function. Sample the brand’s variety of flavors with the Starter Pack. I’m partial to the newest addition, Très Rosé that perfectly encapsulates the crisp, refreshing, and fruity flavors of my favorite wine. But instead of a hangover, you get all the mood-boosting benefits of lion’s mane and saffron.

Kin Euphorics

Infused with adaptogens and nootropics, Kin is a “daily brain care ritual designed to help you connect to your center and find better balance.” A non-alcoholic drink focused on helping calm the brain and promoting relaxation? Yes, please. You can find these by the can or as a pre-mix at specialty convenience stores and cafés. Use their store locator to find a stockist near you.

Recess

Recess entered the scene with its vibey branding and adaptogen-infused sparkling water, but it’s stealing the show with its release of craft mocktails. Select from Margarita, Paloma, Mojito, or Mule—or better yet, stock your fridge with them all. With functional ingredients like guayusa, L-theanine, and lemon balm, expect a mood boost and a healthy dose of chill.

Hiyo

Nootropics, adaptogens, and functional botanicals, hiyo delivers what the brand calls “the float”—its signature stress-relieving, mood-boosting lift. With this variety pack, you can expect everything from cordyceps to ginger and lion’s mane. If you’re looking to step up your wellness game while also indulging in a satisfying sipper, make hiyo your zero-proof brand of choice.

Cann

Branded as a “cannabis-infused social tonic,” Cann is for those who enjoy a little buzz without a full-on hangover. The classic Canns contain 2mg of THC and 4mg of CBD, creating what the brand calls a “relaxing-yet-sociable buzz.” Each can is microdosed with just the right amount of THC, giving you a pleasant buzz without going overboard.

Nowadays

For those who prefer not to drink alcohol but still enjoy a little buzz, Nowadays is another brand that delivers a premium experience. The cannabis-infused spirit comes in two different strengths, 2mg or 6mg THC per serving. As someone who likes a light, social vibe, I find the Micro Dose (2mg) to be perfect. Expect to feel the effects about 15 minutes after taking, and you’ll still wake up feeling clear-headed and energized in the morning. While you can simply enjoy a shot over ice, the brand also offers tons of recipes to experiment with. (I’m partial to the Chilled Heat.)

Whistle Pig

I’ll admit, I’ve never been a whiskey girl until I tried Whistle Pig. And while I’d still consider it a once-in-a-blue-moon bevvy, I did love that the smoky flavor was tempered with a hazy aroma. I had a bottle at Christmas and I can confirm that my dad and brother-in-law were both fans. It’s sweetened with an earthy, caramel-like maple syrup (the real, good stuff) and features non-psychoactive cannabis terpenes to support emotional wellness and provide a calm, happy vibe. And as a born and raised New Englander, I trust anything that comes from Vermont.

Apothékary

Apothékary was one of my favorite wellness brands I encountered in 2023, and it’s continuing to surprise and delight this year. The thoughtfully crafted, clean herbal tinctures combine a host of benefits, including everything from stress relief to gut support to boosted energy and immunity. Made from real plants, every bottle contains a potent herbal experience. I’ve been loving the Rosé-Tinted Glasses as a wine alternative. Ingredients like hibiscus, schisandra berry, and ginseng provide a calm, present energy while reducing stress. It’s exactly what you want from your glass of rosé—with skin-boosting benefits to boot.

If you’re looking for a satisfying and healthy breakfast or snack option—that also happens to be grain-free—this granola is for you. I’ve been meal-prepping this exact grain-free granola recipe every Sunday for the past several months, and it’s so wholesome and delicious, I go through the entire batch most weeks. Packed with a variety of seeds, nuts, and coconut flakes, it’s perfect for those following Paleo, grain-free, gluten-free, or Keto diets—or simply anyone seeking a nutritious start to their day.

Why Eat Grain-Free

I’m working on a post that deep dives into why I’m currently following a grain-free diet (my reason is completely due to the gut health issues that have plagued me for years!) While grains are certainly not “bad” and can even be a really healthy part of some people’s diets, there are a variety of reasons why someone may choose to eliminate or cut back on grains.

 1. Lower Carb Content: Traditional granola typically contains grains like oats, which can be high in carbohydrates. Our grain-free version cuts down on carbs, making it a great choice for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet.
 2. Gluten-Free: Going grain-free means avoiding gluten, making this granola suitable for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
 3. Nutrient-Rich Ingredients: Our recipe features nutrient-dense ingredients like seeds, nuts, and coconut flakes, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.
 4. Blood Sugar Control: With no grains or added sugars, this granola won’t cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, making it a smart choice for those monitoring their glucose.
grain-free granola recipe

This grain-free granola recipe is so simple, I don’t even follow a recipe when I make it on the weekend. Essentially, you take coconut flake cereal (I like this one from Thrive Market), a bunch of seeds, and a bunch of nuts. You spread them out on a baking sheet, then toss in a “wet” mixture of applesauce and egg white until evenly coated (these take the place of the sugar and oil that most granola recipes are loaded with!) Then, you bake until golden brown and crunchy.

My Favorite Ways to Eat Grain-Free Granola

Now that you’ve prepared this healthy grain-free granola, here are some delightful ways to enjoy it throughout the week:

 • Serve with nut milk and fresh berries for a refreshing breakfast.
 • Top your whole milk Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with a generous sprinkle of this crunchy goodness.
 • Get creative by using it as a salad topping for an unexpected and delightful crunch.
 • Satisfy your snack cravings by munching on a handful of this granola all on its own.

This granola is not only a healthier alternative to traditional granola—it’s also a versatile treat that fits into just about any diet (except nut-free!) Make a batch on Sunday, store it in a mason jar in the freezer, and enjoy it throughout the week in countless delicious ways.

Easy Grain-Free Granola

 • Author: Camille Styles
 • Total Time: 50 minutes
 • Yield: 6 cups granola
 • Diet: Gluten Free

Description

I make this easy grain-free granola recipe every Sunday, pop it in the freezer, then enjoy it all week on top of yogurt, fruit, or by the handful as a snack.

Ingredients

Units
 • 3 cups Coconut Flakes cereal (I buy the one from Thrive Market—look for one with the main ingredient organic coconut meat)
 • 1 1/2 cups seeds of choice—I mix sunflower, pumpkin, and hemp seeds
 • 1 1/2 cups raw nuts of choice—slivered almonds and chopped walnuts are my picks
 • 1 egg white
 • 1 small container applesauce
 • 1/2 teaspoon salt
 • Cinnamon, to taste

Instructions

 1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
 2. In a small bowl, mix together egg white, applesauce, salt, and cinnamon.
 3. Spread out the coconut flakes cereal, seeds, and nuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Pour the egg white mixture over, use your hands to toss together until everything is moistened, then spread out in an even layer.
 4. Bake for 20 – 30 minutes until starting to get toasty. Flip the granola and stir it around, then bake for about 15 more minutes until both sides are starting to turn golden brown.
 5. Remove from oven and let cool—the granola will become even crispier as it cools.

Notes

 • Feel free to swap an equal amount of any nuts or seeds—I’ve used flaxseeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds, pecans, and pistachios all with great success!
 • You can also use 1/4 cup canned puréed pumpkin in place of the applesauce. I love to do this in the fall with a pinch of pumpkin pie spice for “pumpkin spice” granola!

2023 was filled with plenty of milestones here at Camille Styles. From the launch of our new site design to celebrating one year of Casa Zuma, there’s been an abundance of inspiration. I’m sure that I don’t speak only for myself when I say that experimenting in the kitchen is a place where I can always discover adventure. For that reason, we’re sharing 2023’s best recipes to provide some culinary inspiration as we enter 2024. These are so good, we’ll definitely be making them for years to come.

Our 2023 Best Recipes—Vibrant Salads, Zingy Cocktails, and More

Our top 15 recipes include bright colors and bold flavors—from citrusy cocktails to nourishing salads, you’ll want to bookmark these. We hope that 2023 brought you just as much joy in the kitchen as these recipes have brought us—cheers to a new year of delicious eating.

salty dog cocktail_2023 best recipes

Salty Dog Cocktail

Why We Love It: Our most popular recipe of the year (and for good reason), this vodka cocktail is always a crowd-pleaser. With a salted rim, tangy grapefruit juice, and the perfect bit of fizz from sparkling water, it’s a balanced bev while still bringing a bit of boozy.

Hero Ingredient: You can’t make a salty dog without fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice.

simple green salad from via carota

Simple Green Salad Inspired By Via Carota

Why We Love It: Simplicity is the key to this all-time favorite salad from Via Carota in NYC. Crunchy romaine is the green machine, paired with Camille’s out-of-this-world shallot vinegarette. Top with nuts for texture or creamy feta for richness.

Hero Ingredient: Dijon mustard is what makes this vinaigrette so addictive.

green salad with sesame dressing_2023 best recipes

Green Salad With Sesame Dressing

Why We Love It: Salads are so much more than a side, and this recipe proves exactly that. With a sesame dressing that calls for tahini as its main player, it’s hard to resist gobbling the bowl down in one sitting. Bulk it up with grilled chicken or fish, or simply serve alongside your favorite main.

Hero Ingredient: Pistachios are an elite salad topping—change my mind.

healthy oatmeal cookies

Healthy Oatmeal Cookies

Why We Love It: This year saw me opting for desserts with nourishing ingredients. These healthy oatmeal cookies inspired me to be a bit more intentional with what I’m putting in my recipes. Whole wheat flour and old-fashioned oats act as complex carbs that allow these cookies to fuel your day in a nutrient-packed (and totally delish) way.

Hero Ingredient: Coconut flakes are a must-have ingredient to enhance these cookies’ texture.

Limoncello spritz cocktail.

Limoncello Spritz

Why We Love It: 2023 was definitely the year of the spritz. For the non-Aperol fans out there, this limoncello spritz is a total win for any spring or summer gathering. With a bit of bubbly, a pinch of lemon juice, and sparkling water, this drink gets better with every sip.

Hero Ingredient: Hellooooo limoncello.

vegetarian lentil chili

Vegetarian Lentil Chili

Why We Love It: This vegetarian chili is a winner for the winter months without all the effort that traditional chili requires. Filled with warming spices like cumin, coriander, and paprika, it’s packed with flavor and nutrients.

Hero Ingredient: If you haven’t dabbled in cooking lentils, now is your time.

Peach oatmeal bake.

Spiced Peach and Pecan Baked Oatmeal

Why We Love It: I may be biased, but this baked oatmeal was the breakfast recipe I had on repeat all of 2023. Spiced peaches have become a newfound favorite of mine with their sweet and savory flavor. Throw that altogether in a hearty oatmeal bake, and you may just become a morning person.

Hero Ingredient: I prefer fresh peaches in this dish, but frozen will do in a pinch.

lemony spring pasta salad_2023 best recipes

Lemony Spring Pasta Salad

Why We Love It: Possibly my favorite internet craze of 2023 was pasta salad—and this springy version is, without a doubt, the most elite variation. With rich parmesan and crunchy arugula, it’s hard to meal prep something that tastes so good.

Hero Ingredient: Liberal amounts of lemon make this pasta bright and zesty—and makes me ready for spring…

orange carrot cake_2023 best recipes

Orange Carrot Cake

Why We Love It: There’s nothing not to love about this carrot cake. The secret ingredient? The orange extract brightens up this light and fluffy cake. (And the cream cheese frosting is simply on another level.)

Hero Ingredient: Orange extract… need I say more?

zucchini pasta

Zucchini Pasta

Why We Love It: This recipe was the pasta dish of the summer for more than one reason. Bright lemon flavors and nutty toppings pair incredibly well with a variety of seasonal squashes. Garnish with fresh mint or basil for both an aesthetic and tasty touch.

Hero Ingredient: Zucchini is highly underrated.

cinnamon baked apples_2023 best recipes

Cinnamon Baked Apples

Why We Love It: Light desserts were a hit in 2023, and these baked apples are no exception. Pair with crunchy granola and a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for a touch of additional sweetness. Trust me—these are some of those hard-to-resist dishes you’ll never regret making.

Hero Ingredient: Honeycrisp apples are my personal favorite.

Tortellini soup recipe.

Tortellini Soup

Why We Love It: When fall came around this year, this tortellini soup recipe may have been my most-cooked recipe. (Though, when it comes to soup season, it’s hard to resist indulging for every meal.) Packed with nutrient-dense veggies, it’s far more than just a side dish.

Hero Ingredient: Roasted red peppers are the secret trick.

ricotta board with pears_2023 best recipes

Ricotta Board with Pears and Pistachios

Why We Love It: Charcuterie can sometimes become overly complicated when you’re involving a multitude of ingredients—but it doesn’t have to be such a hassle. With a simple appetizer like this ricotta board with fresh pears and crunchy pistachios, hosting will be easier than ever.

Hero Ingredient: I’m a ricotta lover till death.

pumpkin chocolate chip cookies

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Why We Love It: PSL season or not—these pumpkin cookies are a year-round favorite. With chopped dark chocolate and a bit of flaky salt, they’re not overly sweet but totally satisfying with every bite.

Hero Ingredient: Pumpkin puree is the hero of these cookies.

gingersnap pumpkin pie_2023 best recipes

Gingersnap Pumpkin Pie

Why We Love It: Last, but certainly not least, this gingersnap pumpkin pie is arguably the best variation of this classic holiday dish. Spicy, creamy, and surrounded by a candy-like crust, it has practically everything you could ask for in a pie.

Hero Ingredient: Gingersnaps for the win!

I’m totally guilty of always leaving my New Year’s Eve plans until the last minute. As a result, in recent years, I’ve grown accustomed to celebrating New Year’s from home (introverts—unite!) While every New Year’s Eve is something to celebrate, no matter the size of your gathering, it’s always worth throwing together something for yourself and those around you. I don’t know about you, but I always find the best way to cheers and celebrate is with champagne cocktails that make the day feel extra special.

Setting up a champagne cocktail bar is super easy, plus it feels a little more special than just setting out a few bottles of bubbly on the counter. Whatever your plans are for this year, you simply can’t go wrong with serving up one of these delicious champagne cocktails. I can’t wait to try the white peach and elderflower cooler, yum! What are your plans for this New Year’s Eve?

27 Champagne Cocktails for NYE and Beyond

Whether you’re hosting a large soiree or an intimate NYE gathering, this list of champagne cocktails has something for every guest. Cheers to a new year!

Lillet Rosé Spritz champagne cocktail

Lillet Rosé Spritz

Why We Love It: If it was possible to fall in love with a cocktail, this would be the drink. A swoon-worthy blend of Lillet Rosé (a French, wine-based aperitif), champagne or Prosecco, and orange bitters create the beautiful, blush-toned hue. It’s gorgeous served in a coupe but will look elegant in just about any glass you can find.

Hero Ingredient: This cocktail is all about color. You can thank the Lillet Rosé for that.

Pomegranate Spice Champagne Cocktail

Pomegranate Spice Champagne Cocktail

Why We Love It: Pomegranates are the crowning jewel of Christmastime, and even after the holidays are over, I savor their ruby-red beauty for as long as I can. Be sure to pick out the freshest pomegranate juice you can find for this recipe.

Hero Ingredient: I’m all about the vanilla’s woodsy sweetness.

Ginger-Citrus Aperol Spritz

Ginger-Citrus Aperol Spritz

Why We Love It: Some might argue that Aperol Spritz is not a good drink. I’d have to say, New York Times, you’re wrong. Far be it from me to question the journalistic integrity of one of my favorite publications, but spritzes should be universally enjoyed. They’re refreshing, colorful, and the best thing to sip on surrounded by your friends in the summertime. And they work equally well served up at your NYE gathering.

Hero Ingredient: Aperol’s vibrant orange hue will send any imbiber straight to Tuscany. Honestly, that’s exactly where I’d want to be on the first of the year.

apple brandy harvest punch

Apple Brandy Harvest Punch

Why We Love It: Let’s take a moment to appreciate how pretty this drink is. The effervescent mixture of champagne, Calvados, and St-Germain is gorgeous, and the orange juice adds the loveliest subtle glow.

Hero Ingredient: While I’d recommend Calvados, any apple brandy is going to give this punch its harvest-y vibes. Perfect for fall, and I’d argue, perfect for NYE.

Elixir de l’Amour

Elixir de l’Amour

Why We Love It: Looking to impress with only a little bit of effort? Serve this to your guests. The name alone is alluring, and when you take your first sip, you’ll already be wanting more.

Hero Ingredient: Rosewater adds a refreshing floral note that’ll ward off any sugar-induced headaches.

kir royale champagne cocktail

Kir Royale from A Couple Cooks

Why We Love It: Full disclosure: Kir royales are my favorite drink. They’re easy while still feeling elegant and celebratory. After all, the French know the beauty of combining berries and bubbly.

Hero Ingredient: This is a two-ingredient cocktail, so between the champagne and Crème de Cassis, I’ll have to choose the latter. It’s a sweet, red liqueur that’s made from blackcurrants, and it gives this drink its signature flavor.

Blackberry Lavender Champagne Cocktail

Blackberry Lavender Champagne Cocktail from The Adventure Bite

Why We Love It: This cocktail might just be the prettiest drink on the list. I love any berry and champagne pairing, but blackberries bring a deep inky sheen that takes your champagne from good to gorgeous.

Hero Ingredient: Add lavender to just about anything for an instantly-elevated effect.

Poinsettia Spritz Punch

Poinsettia Spritz Punch from Half Baked Harvest

Why We Love It: To be clear, zero poinsettias were harmed in the making of this beverage. While the name comes from its ruby red color, it’s just a cranberry-champagne cocktail taken up a notch with St-Germain. This drink is floral and fancy in all the best ways—and definitely what I’ll be toasting with come midnight.

Hero Ingredient: If a drink contains elderflower liqueur, you can bet I’ll be ordering it.

Honey Roasted Pear Sparkling Cocktail

Honey Roasted Pear Sparkling Cocktail from Cotter Crunch

Why We Love It: When the holidays hit and I’ve already had too many slices of pumpkin pie, it’s pears that I turn to for a little sweet relief. They’re earthy and crisp, with the perfect buttery bite. Here, the pears are honey-roasted and blended into a puree, so you get a little bit of sugary spice in every sip.

Hero Ingredient: The tablespoon of balsamic vinegar adds a rich and complex sweetness that’s wonderfully unexpected.

Plum Thyme Prosecco Smash

Plum Thyme Prosecco Smash from My Diary Of Us

Why We Love It: I love the endless possibilities that plums, and really all stone fruits, present. They’re perfect in a salad, wonderful in desserts, and downright delicious in this drink. The impact is an elegant but festive beverage that’s so simple to make.

Hero Ingredient: The thyme simple syrup concentrates all the notes of mint and lemon my favorite herb offers. Garnish with a few sprigs for good measure.

Blackberry French 75

Blackberry French 75 from Heather Christo

Why We Love It: Next to kir royales, the French 75 is my favorite drink. Gin, champagne, lemon juice, and the tiniest bit of sugar—what’s not to love? This take on the classic cocktail infuses blackberries in the simple syrup for fruity flavor and a lavender-like hue.

Hero Ingredient: Lemon juice gives the French 75 its signature sour sip. In this version, the citrus does double duty in cutting the blackberries’ earthy, and slightly tart, undertones.

Grapefruit and Sage Champagne Cocktail

Grapefruit and Sage Champagne Cocktail from The Floating Kitchen

Why We Love It: The cold weather comes around, and suddenly I’m craving citrus at all times of the day. While I can appreciate a good grapefruit in the summer, nothing beats their in-season freshness. Pink grapefruit juice is just about the easiest way to brighten up any cocktail, and I love the slightly tangy, sour bite it gives this otherwise sweet drink.

Hero Ingredient: The creative possibilities are endless when it comes to cocktails. And while sage might seem a little out of the ordinary in a glass, the refreshing, almost eucalyptus-like flavor can’t be matched.

Blood Orange Champagne Mule

Blood Orange Champagne Mule from Half Baked Harvest

Why We Love It: Let me introduce you to just about the closest thing to a party in a glass. This inventive take on a Moscow Mule adds champagne (of course) and showcases blood oranges’ subtle citrus flavor that’s infused with cherry and raspberry notes.

Hero Ingredient: Oranges are great and all, but blood oranges? The best.

Apple Cider Champagne Cocktail

Apple Cider Champagne Cocktail from Well Plated

Why We Love It: Starting in September, I can enjoy apple cider all the way through March. It’s crisp, refreshing, and slightly sour. Plus, cider is exactly what you should add to champagne for festive, but still cozy vibes.

Hero Ingredient: A splash of brandy grounds this cocktail with a bit of body, making it perfect for your midnight toast.

Strawberry Basil Cucumber Rosé Sangria

Strawberry Basil Cucumber Rosé Sangria from Heather Christo

Why We Love It: If, to you, January 1 means one month closer to the start of spring, mix this up stat. While the blend of strawberries, cucumber, and basil signifies warmer days, this cocktail still feels appropriate for inviting in the new year.

Hero Ingredient: The rose petals are a refreshing iteration of the classic strawberry-basil combo.

Lingonberry Aperol Spritz

Lingonberry Aperol Spritz from Sugar & Charm

Why We Love It: While most of what’s found on social media is short-lived, I’d argue that the most Instagram-friendly drink of 2019 will never go out of style. They’re truly timeless, and this Scandinavian twist on the classic is the perfect way to shake things up.

Hero Ingredient: Lingonberries are the perfect balance of being sour, tart, and ever-so-slightly sweet. While I love them in jams, sauces, and my favorite Nordic-inspired baked treats, here, an ounce of lingonberry syrup is the only way to improve upon Aperol’s citrusy flavor.

Peach Basil Bellini

Peach Basil Bellini from Heather Christo

Why We Love It: While biting into a juicy, sun-ripened peach is possible only between June and July, you can recreate the experience in the colder months. Enter: this drink. Peach puree, prosecco, plus a bit of fresh basil, and you’ll be sipping your way straight to summertime.

Hero Ingredient: A little sprig of green basil freshens up this cocktail, making your drink all the more elegant.

Blackberry Thyme Sparkler

Blackberry Thyme Sparkler from The Effortless Chic

Why We Love It: Fresh and fruity, this cocktail is bound to be the most-talked-about part of your evening. A gold-sugared rim gives it an extra bit of glam that doesn’t feel over the top. Serve it up in chic champagne flutes for extra appeal.

Hero Ingredient: With a distinctly herbal flavor, gin is a perfect complement to most champagne’s apple, pear, and citrus notes.

Cherry Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail

Cherry Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail from Jennifer Meyering

Why We Love It: I don’t ask for much, so when a drink can be made with five ingredients, I’m satisfied. When these components come together to create a stunning sipper like this? Well, consider me impressed. The cherry-pomegranate syrup brings color and cheers to every single glass.

Hero Ingredient: I always need a little sweetness with my champagne, and thanks to the fresh cherries, this cocktail delivers.

Cucumber Mint Sparkler

Cucumber Mint Sparkler from Domesticate Me

Why We Love It: These fizzy drinks feel light while still supplying a fair amount of festivity. The pretty pale green hue is a sight to behold, and, of course, the cocktail itself is something to be savored.

Hero Ingredient: Finely-chopped cucumber offers up a cooling flavor that mixes well with the lime and mint.

Cranberry Orange Mimosa

Cranberry Orange Mimosa with Candied Rosemary from Vegetarian Ventures

Why We Love It: While mimosas are my brunch beverage of choice (following coffee, of course), I’d also invite them to any party I’m having no matter the time of day. I’m already planning my pajamas, snacks, and NYE movie picks around this cocktail.

Hero Ingredient: Garnishing your glass with a sprig of candied rosemary upgrades your champagne to seasonal cocktail status.

White Peach and Elderflower Cooler

White Peach and Elderflower Cooler from Donna Hay

Why We Love It: Cocktails are an opportunity to compose a color palette and flavor profile of all your favorite tastes, textures, and hues. This drink’s particular mix of pale yellow and romantic, peachy pink is truly a work of art.

Hero Ingredient: You really can’t go wrong with elderflower. Both the cordial and fresh flowers in this drink offer a distinctly fresh and floral sweetness that’s full of nuance.

Rose and Black Currant Champagne

Rose and Black Currant Champagne from Donna Hay

Why We Love It: This is not your average champagne cocktail. Blackcurrant cordial concentrates the fruit’s tart, grape-like flavor and is responsible for this drink’s rose-colored hue.

Hero Ingredient: A sugar cube in each glass doesn’t just add sweetness. When the cube hits the champagne, you’ll create a spark of celebratory bubbles.

Champagne Margarita

Champagne Margarita from 40 Aprons

Why We Love It: Now here’s a New Year’s Eve cocktail. It’s sour, it’s sweet, and it’s strong. But is it really an NYE celebration if you’re not pulling out all the stops?

Hero Ingredient: Orange liqueur is the perfect bridge between sweet champagne and all the flavors of the classic, zesty cocktail.

Raspberry Mimosa

Raspberry Mimosa from A Southern Soul

Why We Love It: Get ready to load up on the bubbly—these mimosas are going to be a hit. This drink is special without feeling fussy. The combo of sorbet, grenadine, raspberries, and champagne will fill each glass with a light and sweet flavor.

Hero Ingredient: Grenadine takes me back to my seven-year-old self, sipping on Shirley Temples. While this mimosa is a bit more age-appropriate, it’s still nostalgic in all the best ways.

Fizzy Spiked Pear Punch

Fizzy Spiked Pear Punch from The Sweetest Occasion

Why We Love It: I’m all for big-batch recipes that let me do the prep ahead of time. Mixing up a pitcher of this punch means less time in the kitchen, and more time making toasts with all of your loved ones. This is the perfect cocktail to have alongside a snacking board filled with your favorite in-season bites. And seriously, how pretty are those pear slices?

Hero Ingredient: Vanilla vodka might sound like something you haven’t touched since college, but trust me when I say it’ll seal in all the cold-weather flavors you crave.

Ginger Spritz

Ginger Spritz from Bon Appétit

Why We Love It: Bubbly cava and ginger beer fill your glass with a light, refreshing flavor. This drink works just as well at your NYE party as it would at your New Year’s Day brunch.

Hero Ingredient: The thinnest slice of peeled ginger is all the garnish this sweet and spicy cocktail needs.
